Lundi 29 novembre 2004 un peu plus de 150 personnes étaient
réunies sur le lieu où se tiendra le nouveau bâtiment
du lycée, afin de célébrer ce projet immobilier.
Monsieur l'Ambassadeur Levitte et Monsieur Douglas Duncan, Montgomery
County Executive, se joignirent à Monsieur Liétard, à Madame
Quélen et aux membres du Board pour ce moment important dans
l'histoire du Lycée.
Madame Quélen accueillit chaleureusement les parents, élèves,
enseignants, anciens élèves, anciens membres du Board,
anciens enseignants ainsi que les voisins. Elle remercia Monsieur Duncan
et Monsieur l'Ambassadeur de leur présence. En exprimant sa
gratitude aux voisins de l'école, Madame Quélen ajouta, ‘Ce
projet est l'aboutissement d'une proche collaboration entre nos voisins
et la communauté scolaire. Le Lycée fait partie intégrale
de Bethesda depuis de nombreuses années, et nous sommes heureux
de nous compter parmi cette communauté qui a bien voulu nous
accueillir nous et nos élèves.' (Le

Monsieur Philippe Liétard, Président du Board du Lycée
Rochambeau a souligné le rôle important des élèves
en tant qu'ambassadeurs de cet enseignement unique, lorsqu'ils intègrent
les différentes universités nord-américaines et
européennes. Monsieur Liétard a fait remarquer que la
construction de ce nouveau bâtiment dans le Montgomery County
permettra à l'Ecole de mieux remplir sa mission qui est de préparer
les élèves au baccalauréat français et
de promouvoir la langue et la culture française dans un contexte

Son Excellence, Jean-David Levitte, Ambassadeur de France aux Etats-Unis,
remercia Monsieur Duncan de sa présence et dit ‘Je suis
très honoré d'être présent à cette
cérémonie pour le nouveau lycée. Dans un pays
aussi diversifié et accueillant que les Etats-Unis, il est important
que les Français et les personnes de langue française,
puissent transmettre un héritage à leurs enfants, tout
comme il est enrichissant pour les habitants du Montgomery County de
pouvoir connaître d'autres cultures. J'admire le dévouement
du personnel enseignant et de l'administration du Lycée Rochambeau
qui favorisent les échanges culturels dans cette région
et qui apportent un excellent enseignement français à des élèves
de tous horizons.'
Monsieur Duncan prit ensuite la parole et loua l'Ecole pour ‘l'apport
pédagogique et culturel fourni par le Lycée depuis des
années.' Il continua en disant ‘Des établissements internationaux
tels que le Lycée Rochambeau apportent beaucoup de richesse
culturelle à notre communauté, et je suis heureux que
l'école soit établie dans notre comté.'
Après ces brefs discours, Monsieur Andrew White interpréta
une version entraînante de La Marseillaise au saxophone. Monsieur
Jean-François Bescond interpréta ensuite à la
clarinette une émouvante version de l'hymne national américain.
Ensuite, Madame Quélen invita Monsieur l'Ambassadeur, le County
Executive et le Président du Board à se joindre aux élèves
pour le premier coup de pelle. Les enfants donnèrent un casque
et une pelle aux adultes pour commencer à creuser ! Roshan
Singh, Olivier Estaque, Sara Baba, Sanyath Radj, Nicholas Rodman, Dana
Jordan, Carla et Ariana Mavaddat étaient les élèves
délégués.
Lorsque tous retournèrent s'asseoir, Madame Quélen offrit à Monsieur
l'Ambassadeur une petite pelle commémorative avec le nom du
lycée et la date. Monsieur Liétard fit de même
pour Monsieur Duncan et Monsieur Simon de Coakley Williams fit de même également
pour Monsieur Liétard.
Madame Quélen présenta Monsieur Kilajian, ancien président
du Board et Madame Vannouque-Digne et les remercia pour leur investissement
dans ce projet durant des années. Elle présenta aussi
Monsieur Pierre Van den Boogaerde, trésorier du Board et Madame
Esther Varlay, vice-présidente du Board ; il s'approchèrent
pour avoir une pelle et un casque et creuser.
Ce fut le tour de Madame Catherine Schaeffer, présidente de
l'association des parents, de Monsieur Martin Klauber du Peoples Council
of Montgomery County ; des représentants de l'association
des enseignants et des non-enseignants, Madame Curioni et Madame Baessaha.
Ces personnes allèrent creuser et posèrent pour les traditionnelles
photos. Durant cette partie de la cérémonie, les élèves
de la chorale du lycée chantèrent en français
et en anglais sous la direction de Madame Singh-Lamy, Madame Le Bouder
et Madame Sarriot. Ces chants ajoutèrent un air de fête à cette
célébration qui se déroula sous un ciel clair
et ensoleillé pendant que des enfants agitaient drapeaux français
et américains!
Madame Quélen remercia toutes les personnes présentes
et les invita à un buffet au CDI.
La Fondation et le Lycée Rochambeau remercient les sociétés

en matière de son ainsi que pour son aide en général !

Ground Breaking Ceremony
On Monday November 29,2004 over 150 people gathered at the site of the new high school building to celebrate the building project with a ground breaking ceremony. Ambassador Levitte and Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan joined Mr. Lietard, Mme. Quelen and Board members to recognize an important moment in the history of the Lycee.
Mme. Quelen warmly greeted the enthusiastic group of parents, students, teachers, alumni, past board members, former faculty and neighbors. Mme Quelen thanked Montgomery County Executive Douglas Duncan and Ambassador Levitte for being with us. Expressing her gratitude to the school's neighbors, Quelen added, “This project is the result of a close and productive collaboration between the neighbors, and the school community. The Lycée has been an integral part of the Bethesda area for many years, and we are grateful and happy to be part of a community which has been so welcoming and propitious for our students.” ( Mme Quelen's entire speech can be found on the web site )
Philippe Lietard, President of the Board of Trustees of the Lycee Rochambeau
emphasized the role the highly qualified student body plays as ambassadors
of this unique education as they move on to various North American and
European universities. Mr. Lietard pointed out that the construction
of this new high school in Montgomery County allows the school to more
effectively implement its mission to prepare students for the French
baccalaureate and to promote the diffusion of French language and culture
in an American context.

His Excellency, Jean-David Levitte, French Ambassador to the United States , thanked Mr. Duncan for his presence and said, “I am honored to be part of the groundbreaking ceremony for this new high school. In such a wonderfully diverse and welcoming country as the United States , it is important that natives and non-natives French speakers be able to transmit their heritage to their children, just as it is enriching for Montgomery county residents to be able to experience other cultures. I admire the dedication of the Lycée Rochambeau administration and teaching staff in fostering cultural exchanges in this area and in bringing this excellent French education to a varied student body.”
Mr. Duncan then spoke and praised the French International School for “the educational and cultural contributions the school has made over the years.” He remarked that “International educational establishments such as the Lycée Rochambeau are invaluable to the cultural wealth of our community, and I am pleased that the school has taken roots in our county.”
After the brief speeches Mr. Andrew White played a stirring rendition of the French National Anthem on the saxophone. This was followed by a moving version of the US anthem played on the clarinet by Mr. Jean-Francois Bescond. Mme. Quelen then invited the Ambassador, the County executive and Board president to join the student representatives at the digging site. The children gave the adults a hard hat and shovel to start the digging! The student representatives were: Roshan Singh, Oliver Estaque, Sara Baba, Sanyath Radj, Nicholas Rodma, Dana Jordan, Carla and Ariana Mavadet.
After this group returned to the stage, Mme Quelen presented the Ambassador with a ceremonial, commemorative shovel engraved with the school's name and date of the event. Mr. Lietard then presented Mr. Duncan with a commemorative shovel, and Mr. Simon of Coakley Williams presented Mr. Lietard with a commemorative shovel.
Mme Quelen introduced Mr. Kilajian, former Board Chair and Mme Vannouque-Digne and thanked them for their support. She also introduces M. Pierre Van den Boogaerde, Board Treasurer and Mme Esther Varkay, Vice President of the Board; they came forward for hats, shovels and digging.
Next, Mme Quelen introduced the Parent Association President Mrs. Catherine Schaeffer along with Mr. Martin Klauber of the Peoples Council of Montgomery County; the representative of the Teachers Association, Mme Courioni and Dalila Bessaha, representative of the Non Faculty Association. This group proceeded to the digging area, for the ceremonial digging and photos. During the groundbreaking event the Lycee children's choir, under the able direction of Mme Singh-Lamy, Ms Le Bouder and Mme Sarriot, performed songs in French and English. Their voices added to the celebratory spirit of the clear, sunny day as students in the crowd waved French and American flags!
Mme Quelen then thanked everyone and invited all to a buffet reception in the library.
