Silver Spring, Departure Thursday May 18th at 7 :45 AM
Everyone was motivated for the trip, despite some being quite tired from having to wake up early. The bus ride was a very pleasant one, as the whole group was seated together, thus creating a pleasant ambiance for the trip.
Before we knew it, we got there on time, and headed directly to our hotel to place our luggage. After having something to eat at the restaurant next door to the hotel, we were off to the opening ceremonies at UN Headquarters. We treated to an original type of ceremony ; first, we heard the enthusiastic voice of a choir composed of girls from NYC. Following this, inspiring speeches were delivered to us from primordial people working at the UN such as Mr. Jan Eliasson (President of the 16th Session of the UN Geberal Assembly as well as Joel Klein (Chancellor of NY Public Schools). Then Russell Simmons, one of the most successful businessmen in NY, also one of the pioneers for hip-hop culture was invited to make a speach. He told us that he already had a speech prepared by other people for him, but he decided that he should express his feelings in an improvised fashion. He made clear points even though grammar wasn't flawless. He mentioned how it didn't have to be complicated to make this world better, he criticized old and smart people, saying that their complex resolutions usually exasterbated conflicts in the world. He believed that we (younger generations) were going to be the solution for making this world a better place. Finally he precised that world peace can never be reached, but with faith in God and hard work we can defenitely make a change.
Afterwords, it was time to get to the « surprise » Miss Conlin and Mr. Durand were planning for us. We went to see the Blue Man Group. A 3 man « band » composed of percussionists who design unique creative rythms and master the art of drumming. We had the best seats in the house, even though we were sometimes faced with some sticky surprises such as mashed bananas. Generally, the group appreciated the show, although some unlucky few had their sharp looking suits stained with bananas. Everyone was sure to pay a great thanks to the teachers for the spectacular show. Following this, we were in search of a restaurant. We were in luck as we found one which also had a blues band playing inside. After filling up with some great food, it was time to get back to the hotel so we could rest up for the next day.
