Voyage en Angleterre : entre patrimoine et aventure

 

Ce premier voyage à Londres et Stratford-Upon-Avon a offert à 79 de nos élèves de 4e une immersion inoubliable dans l’histoire, la littérature et la culture britanniques.

Organisé par Mme Zappe et accompagné de Mme Bedoya, Mme Jackson, Mme Kidd, Mme Leistiko, M. Lepetit, M. Moreau et M. Yin Yeung Cho, ce périple de huit jours a conduit les élèves à Londres, Oxford, Stratford, au château de Warwick et à Stonehenge, avec au programme une série d’activités aussi captivantes que divertissantes… le tout sous un soleil étonnamment généreux !

 

Jour 0 – Départ de Washington Dulles

 

Jour 1 – Parlement britannique / London Eye

À peine arrivés, les élèves ont été accueillis par leurs chauffeurs et conduits au cœur de Londres. Après avoir déposé leurs bagages à l’auberge de jeunesse YHA St. Paul’s, direction le Parlement britannique pour une première visite. Puis, malgré la fatigue du voyage, ils ont poursuivi jusqu’au London Eye pour admirer une vue spectaculaire de la ville. La journée s’est conclue par un dîner collectif et une soirée libre avant de retrouver le repos bien mérité.

 

Jour 2 – Globe Theatre / British Museum

Visite du célèbre Globe Theatre, où les élèves ont eu la chance d’assister à une répétition de La Nuit des Rois par de jeunes acteurs locaux. Les guides, impressionnés par les connaissances de nos élèves, ont partagé anecdotes et récits de la scène élisabéthaine. Après un déjeuner au soleil, ils ont rejoint le British Museum pour une chasse au trésor imaginée par l’un d’entre eux.

 

Jour 3 – Tour de Londres / Tower Bridge / Soirée théâtre

Répartis par groupes, les élèves ont exploré la Tour de Londres, en découvrant l’histoire parfois macabre du lieu et en admirant les joyaux de la Couronne. Après une courte marche sur le Tower Bridge, retour à l’auberge pour se préparer à la soirée : direction le théâtre pour Back to the Future !

 

Jour 4 – Matinée libre / Visite d’Oxford / Soirée théâtre

Chacun a pu explorer Londres librement avant de reprendre la route vers Oxford. La visite de la bibliothèque Bodléienne, connue notamment pour ses apparitions dans Harry Potter, en a impressionné plus d’un. Le clou de la soirée ? La glace servie à l’entracte du spectacle !

 

Jour 5 – Stratford-upon-Avon

Au programme : un atelier de théâtre autour du Songe d’une nuit d’été et la découverte des lieux emblématiques de la vie de Shakespeare, dont sa maison natale, la Guildhall et la maison d’Anne Hathaway, où les jardins en fleurs ont ravi les élèves. La soirée s’est déroulée dans la cour de l’auberge, entre jeux collectifs et rires.

 

Jour 6 – Château de Warwick

Plongée au cœur du Moyen Âge : les élèves ont découvert les forteresses normandes et les armes médiévales, participé à des démonstrations encadrées par des maîtres d’armes, et même été contraints de faire des pompes en cas d’échec ! Le spectacle de rapaces en vol a ébloui tout le monde, et la visite du donjon a réservé son lot de frissons, y compris pour les enseignants, embarqués dans un procès pour sorcellerie !

Jour 7 – Stonehenge / Salisbury

Sous un ciel toujours radieux, découverte du mythique site de Stonehenge, suivie d’une visite de la cathédrale de Salisbury et de la Magna Carta, document fondateur de nombreux principes juridiques modernes.

 

Jour 8 – Retour à la maison

Épuisés mais ravis, les élèves sont rentrés la tête pleine de souvenirs. Nombre d’entre eux ont fait de nouvelles rencontres, noué des amitiés, et certains ont même déclaré avoir vécu le plus beau voyage de leur vie. Désolé papa et maman !...

England trip between heritage and adventure

 

This first trip to London and Stratford-Upon-Avon furnished 79 of our 8th grade students the opportunity to discover the historical, literary and cultural heritage of England.

 

Organized by Ms. Zappe and accompanied by Ms. Bedoya, Ms. Jackson, Ms. Kidd, Ms. Leistiko, M. Lepetit, M. Moreau and M. Yin Yeung Cho, students visited London, Oxford, Stratford, Warwick Castle and Stonehenge for an 8-day travel extravaganza, filled with interesting and entertaining activities and spoiled by surprising sunshine.

 

DAY 0: DEPARTURE FROM IAD

 

DAY 1: UK PARLIAMENT / LONDON EYE

Upon arriving from the airport, students met their bus drivers, who whisked us to city center. They dropped their luggage at the YHA St. Paul’s youth hostel in central city and then went on their first visit, the British Parliament. After that they braved the traffic to walk to the London Eye, the iconic ferris wheel with even more iconic views. After eating dinner together, they enjoyed free time before settling into their rooms for the night.

 

DAY 2: GLOBE THEATER / BRITISH MUSEUM

The students visited Shakespeare’s Globe Theater on the south bank and were treated to an impromptu performance by local teenagers preparing a production of Twelfth Night. The tour guides, pleased with the background knowledge of our students, entertained us with funny anecdotes from the Elizabethan theater scene.

After a lunch in the sunshine, students walked to the British Museum where they engaged in a scavenger hunt created by one of the students.

 

DAY 3: TOWER OF LONDON / TOWER BRIDGE / THEATER OUTING

Students divided into groups and toured the Tower of London, learning gruesome facts about history and marveling at the Crown Jewels…just like in the Minion’s movie! After a short walk on the Tower Bridge, famous in the childhood song “London Bridge is falling down…” students returned to the hostel to prepare for the evening theater outing: Back to the Future!

 

DAY 4: FREE TIME IN LONDON / OXFORD TOUR / THEATER OUTING

The eight groups spent the morning discovering London on their own, before boarding the buses for Oxford University. A visit to the famous Bodleian Library of Harry Potter fame left them in awe. The highlight of the evening theater performance was the ice cream served at intermission.

 

DAY 5: STRATFORD-UPON-AVON

For half the day, students participated in an acting workshop crafted around the play “A Midsummer Night’s Dream.” For the other half of the day, students visited Shakespeare’s birthplace as well as the Schoolroom and Guildhall where they had lessons in quill writing. A visit to Anne Hathaway’s cottage allowed them to enjoy playing in the flowering gardens. In the evening, they all played outside in the extensive yard of the youth hostel, enjoying the fresh air and communal games rather than being on their phones.

 

DAY 6: WARWICK CASTLE

The trip to Warwick Castle allowed students to learn about Norman forts and fortifications and medieval warfare and weaponry. They were put through their paces by trained weapons masters and forced to do push-ups if they did not do well. A Bird of Prey demonstration left everyone speechless as falcons, hawks, eagles and even a condor soared between the rows of spectators. The dungeon tour was filled with frights and delights, and even teachers were pulled into the fun…if you call being put on trial for witchcraft fun!

 

DAY 7: STONEHENGE / SALISBURY

Students discovered momentous Stonehenge, on another solidly sunny day on the Salisbury plain, and then traveled to the Cathedral in Salisbury to view the Magna Carta, a document from 1215 underpinning basic principles of English and American law.

 

DAY 8: RETURN HOME

Exhausted but exhilarated, students were ready to return home. Many said that they were able to meet new people and make friends. Some said it was “the best trips of [their] lives.” Sorry Mom and Dad!...
