Le 29 octobre dernier, Rochambeau a eu l'honneur de recevoir l'écrivain français Patrick Chamoiseau pour une rencontre passionnante avec nos lycéens (2nde, 1ere et Tle IB). 

Natale, seconde, dominée ou dominante, c’est la langue, matériau de l’écrivain, qui a été la pierre angulaire de l’échange très stimulant avec Patrick Chamoiseau. 

Il a invité chacun d’entre nous à sortir de l’assignation de la fonctionnalité d’une langue pour l’explorer et organiser ainsi notre propre expression artistique. Il a expliqué que l’écriture lui a permis de compenser le fait d’être muet à l’école, lui qui pensait en créole et le parlait à la maison. 

A cette occasion, il a montré non seulement l’importance mais la nécessité du multiliguisme, en utilisant l’expression “vivre dans plusieurs langues”.

Les élèves ont été invités à s’interroger et, à leur tour, à écrire sur ce que signifie pour eux “vivre dans plusieurs langues” et sur les mots de Chamoiseau qui ont particulièrement résonné en eux.

Ainsi, ils se sont montrés particulièrement réceptifs à son discours sur la nécessité de l’art “qui sert à faire des trous dans les murs qui peuvent nous enfermer”, nous incitant à créer notre “sentimenthèque”, qui rassemblerait les oeuvres d’art auxquelles nous sommes très attachés et qui marquent notre existence.

On October 29, Rochambeau was honored to welcome French author Patrick Chamoiseau for a fascinating meeting with our high school students (2nde, 1ere and Tle IB). 

Whether native, second, dominant or dominated, language, the writer's material, was the cornerstone of the highly stimulating exchange with Patrick Chamoiseau. 

He invited each and every one of us to step outside our assigned functionality of language, to explore it and organize our own artistic expression. He explained that writing enabled him to compensate for being mute at school, thinking in Creole and speaking it at home. 

On this occasion, he demonstrated not only the importance but also the necessity of multilingualism, using the expression “living in several languages”.

Students were invited to reflect and, in return, write about what “living in several languages” means to them, and which of Chamoiseau's words particularly resonated with them.

Students were particularly receptive to Chamoiseau's words on the need for art “to make holes in the walls that can shut us in”, and to encourage us to create our own “sentimenthèque”, a collection of works of art that we hold dear and that mark our existence.
