Special recognition for two high school students!

Klara Drees-Gross ’22 and Nicolas Wellington ’22 have been recognized by the National Merit Scholarship Program as a Semifinalist and Commended Student, respectively. Klara and Nicolas were among the highest scoring students on their PSAT/NMSQT ® exam in the state of Maryland, which served as the initial screen of program entrants. This is a recognition that reflects their hard work and the excellent preparation by the teaching faculty at Rochambeau.

Klara, a committed student
In February, Klara will find out if she will move on to the next phase of the competition to be considered for one of 7,500 National Merit Scholarships. While is very proud to be a semi-finalist, Klara admits that her mind is currently occupied with university applications!

Klara arrived at Rochambeau in 5th grade. She has been very involved in school clubs and activities. Interested in debate and public speaking, Klara participated in Ambassadeurs en herbe, a project developed around public speaking tournaments. Klara is co-founder of the Python Club, a club that allows students to participate in interactive computer programming, and also to meet experts in this field as part of student conferences. Outside of Rochambeau, Klara volunteers with Fair Fight Initiative, a non-profit organization that exposes mistreatment in the law enforcement system and works to end mass incarceration.

We asked Klara what she will remember most about Rochambeau after her graduation in June 2022, and she told us how much she loves our school’s “international character…the diversity of the students…and the openness of the teachers.”

Nicolas, 13 years of involvement in the school
With this recognition, Nicolas is one of 34,000 students recognized for his academic excellence and promising future. Receiving this award is a source of pride for Nicolas, who put hundreds of hours into preparing for the SAT exam over a period of three months. He invites future students to invest time and energy in preparing for the SAT and to enroll in the National Merit Scholarship Program. “It can go a long way!”

In addition to his academic excellence, Nicolas distinguishes himself by his active involvement at school. As soon as he arrived at Rochambeau in kindergarten, Nicolas was part of the soccer team. And this year, his senior year, he is team captain!  In tenth grade, he participated in our Model UN and traveled with the club to visit the United Nations headquarters in New York City and compete in a national competition. He is currently the treasurer of our school’s National Honor Society (NHS), a club whose purpose is to organize individual and group projects inside and outside of school, serving as role models and leaders for the school's students. In his free timeNicolas is also a tutor in French and English.

Looking forward to life after graduation in June, Nicolas is certain he will take with him many  fond memories of his years at Rochambeau including many fantastic teachers and time with his classmates, some of whom are sure to be lifelong friends... and hopefully welcome him when traveling worldwide in the future!l.

As these two Seniors prepare for University life, Nicolas hopes to study economics, statistics or politics. Klara is considering devoting her studies to mathematics and social and racial justice. There is no doubt that these two exceptional students will leave their mark at Rochambeau.
