Back-to-School News & Updates

Welcome back to school! For those of you I haven’t yet met, I’m Emily Parliman, the University Counselor. I work with students applying to any non-French universities. I’ll generally be sending biweekly email newsletters with important dates, deadlines, and information for students and parents on all matters related to universities and applications. Students should check their Rochambeau email accounts frequently, and parents will receive messages at the email addresses they have provided to the school.

College Counseling Parent Meetings

Dates for the fall: September 7, October 12, November 16, December 14

Throughout the year I hold occasional morning meetings for parents to learn more about the non-French university process. These are informal gatherings, based around a specific topic but an opportunity to discuss any questions or concerns you may have. Parents of students in quatrième, troisième, seconde, première, and terminale are invited to attend.

Each meeting will start at 8:30am on a Wednesday, in the large conference room in the administration building. *Please note this is a change in location from last year’s meetings.* La Grande Salle de Reunion is room 212, upstairs in the Administration Building. At the top of the stairs, turn right and go to the end of the hall. The conference room will be on your right.

I hope to see you at the first meeting on September 7, at which will we discuss scholarships and financial aid. Topics for each meeting with be announced in the preceding weeks, but some of the topics discussed last year included:

  • Standardized testing information, preparation options

  • Researching and choosing a variety of university options, importance of visiting university campuses

  • Importance of teacher recommendation letters, process and timeline for requesting letters, etiquette, and how the counselor recommendation letter is used

  • Overview of different countries' application processes

  • What families can do over the summer to work toward students’ college goals (essays, starting applications, participating in summer programs or other activities)

Update to Naviance system - Letters of Recommendation

Terminale families should now be familiar with Naviance Family Connection, the website University Counseling uses to submit transcripts, letters of recommendation, and other documents to your colleges. Some students may already have sent electronic requests to their teachers for recommendation letters. Naviance has informed us that, due to technical updates made over the summer, any requests made up until now are no longer available. In mid-September, when the system updates are finished, you’ll be able to go into Family Connection and make your electronic requests.

You’ll notice that you can request teacher recommendations for specific colleges. For Common Application member schools, students can request only the number of letters that the college accepts. (For example, if a college only allows two teacher letters of recommendation, you won’t be able to send three letters to that school.) You’ll also be able to see when letters have been submitted.

University of Chicago - All-Expense Paid Visit Opportunity for Terminales

The Discover UChicago Fly-In Program is an all-expense paid opportunity for terminales from underrepresented backgrounds (students of color, first generation to attend college, or low-income families) to discover the city of Chicago with current UChicago students, spend a night on the campus, and learn more about academic and student life programs. Fly into Chicago’s Midway Airport on Sunday, October 9th, and depart after attending the Columbus Day Open House on Monday, October 10th.

Space is limited and an application is required (including a short essay, an unofficial transcript, and self-reported SAT/ACT scores). You’ll need to request an unofficial transcript from Mme. Bessaha, our registrar, to be faxed to UChicago.
